Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting. Things to know: Cedar Grove’s tour of Class 7A powers continues after beating Westlake 30-20 and Collins Hills 40-6, victories that bounced their opponents out of the top 10. Cedar Grove will travel to No. 4 Colquitt County next week to conclude the ambitious grand slam. Cedar Grove has won four of the past six 3A titles, but what makes this team potentially the best yet is its passing game. Elliot Colson, a sophomore with major Division I offers, is 39-of-57 passing for 580 yards and four touchdowns. There are several able receivers, including Barry Jackson (11 receptions, 191 yards, committed to Nebraska) and Ricky Lee (14-175, committed to UConn). Mill Creek is a balanced team. Hayden Clark is averaging 221 yards passing per game, well above his 2021 average of 159. Cam Robinson has rushed for 335, including 150 against Norcross. Mill Creek’s best all-around player, if not the state’s, is Alabama-committed safety Caleb Downs. A two-way starter, he has scored five touchdowns, one on an interception return. The computer Massey Ratings have both these teams in the top 25 nationally, Cedar Grove at No. 11 and Mill Creek at No. 16.

I expected a closer game vs MC.

GardenStateBaller
Cedar Grove at Colquitt County When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium, Moultrie Records, rankings: Cedar Grove is 3-1 and No. 1 in Class 3A; Colquitt County is 4-0 and No. 3 in 7A. Last meeting: Colquitt County won 28-19 in 2021. Things to know: Cedar Grove, the defending Class 3A champion, resumes its Class 7A tour in Moultrie. QB Elliott Colson is 58-of-87 passing for 895 yards and seven touchdowns. His top receivers are Barry Jackson (346 receiving yards, committed to Nebraska) and Ricky Lee (264 receiving yards, committed to UConn). On defense, CB Kayin Lee (committed to Ohio State), LB Everett Roussaw and DL Adonijah Green (Louisville) are major Division I recruits. Colquitt County also is gifted in its offensive playmakers. Last meeting: Mill Creek won 43-10 in 2021. Khyair Spain, a junior, has rushed for 771 yards, second-most in Class 7A and about half of Parkview’s total offense. Mike Matthews, a consensus top-10 national recruit among juniors, has 15 receptions for 242 yards and four touchdowns. DE Nolan Marshall leads the team with 17 solo tackles and five tackles for losses. This is Parkview’s best start since 2018. Mill Creek, ranked No. 1 in all classes in the computer Maxwell Ratings, is averaging 45.25 points per game, second-most in 7A. Mill Creek’s offense is balanced at 206 yards rushing and 197 passing per game. Cam Robinson has rushed for 499 yards. Hayden Clark has passed for 757. Makhail Wood has 323 yards receiving. GPB has Woodward ranked #3 in 6A and we play them tomorrow night in what is essentially the region 3 championship. Both will be favored in the remainder of their schedule. Lovejoy 3-2, 2-0, lost to Crisp county, a AAA school 41-25. Crisp is currently ranked # 10 by MP and GPB in their class. We also lost to South Atlanta, the team with the states leading rusher from last season, Keyjuan Brown. Contained him for 2 quarters..........total? 324 yards on 31 carries and 4 TD's. He had 79 at half. South Atlanta is currently #9 by MP, #3 by GPB. We are at our low point but the kids play on. I could write a book after attending games for the last 22 years here. Still seeing many first......like those 2 loses to smaller schools. Maybe we can beat a top ranked team in the state and reverse our fortunes. Don't think we have ever lost on Thursday.

GardenStateBaller
Collins Hill at Buford When, where: 7 p.m. Friday, Tom Riden Stadium, Buford Records, rankings: Collins Hill is 2-3 overall, 0-0 in Region 8-7A and unranked; Buford is 5-0, 0-0 and No. 1 Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting. Things to know: It’s not the game ESPN anticipated when it decided to make it part of the GEICO Showcase Series. These are reigning state champions, Collins Hill from 7A and Buford from 6A. Buford is now in the highest class and competing in Collins Hill’s region. The Wolves are 5-0 and the consensus No. 7 team in the country. Collins Hill is 2-3, young and overwhelmed by injury. As many as eight starters were missing from Collins Hill’s 40-6 shellacking from Cedar Grove on Sept. 9. Collins Hill’s highest-rated recruit, Ethan Davis, won’t play this season because of an injury. Collins Hill is not without good players, though. DB/WR Jayden Davis is committed to Louisville, and LB Dion Crawford is a three-star prospect. Buford’s long list of top recruits bears repeating since ESPN is calling this a showcase. It includes RB Justice Haynes (Alabama commit), DB/WR K.J. Bolden, DE Eddrick Houston, OL Paul Mubenga, DE Alijah Williams, LB Ryan McKinnis (Appalachian State), QB Dylan Wittke (Virginia Tech), DB Tyshun White, DB Jadon Perlotte and DB Devin Williams. All are three-star recruits or higher.
