Carver (Atlanta) at Cedar Grove

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, William Buck Godfrey Stadium, Decatur
Records, rankings: Carver is 6-2 overall, 1-1 in Region 5-3A and No. 4; Cedar Grove is 6-2, 2-0 and No. 1.
Last meeting: Cedar Grove won 56-26 in the 2021 Class 3A championship game.
Things to know: Cedar Grove will win the region outright with a victory. Carver can claim the title in a tiebreaker that includes Sandy Creek (7-2, 1-1) with a victory of 13 points or more. Cedar Grove and Carver are similarly constructed this season, though Cedar Grove might be considered the big brother given its history of five state titles over seven seasons. Both have good passing quarterbacks with two standout receivers. For Cedar Grove, that’s Elliott Colson (1,837 passing yards, 20 touchdowns), Barry Jackson (661 receiving yards) and Ricky Lee (436 receiving yards). For Carver, it’s Bryce Bowens (1,441 passing), Deandre Buchannon (543 receiving) and Zykeek Mender (540 receiving). Neither team has more than 1,250 yards rushing. (Carver had two 1,500 rushers last season.) Both have disruptive game-changers on defense. LB Adonijah Green (committed to Louisville) and CB Kayin Lee (Ohio State) are the best known for Cedar Grove. LB Everett Roussaw, another Division I prospect, is recently back from injury. Carver’s Aquintis Clemmons, Akiliss Smith and Jamontez Hines have more than 50 tackles for losses among themselves. Neither team is afraid to lose. Cedar Grove has played seven ranked opponents, four from class 7A, and beaten four. Carver’s losses are to No. 3 Sandy Creek in region play and to Buford.

Norcross has won seven straight games after August losses to Brookwood and Mill Creek. North Gwinnett lost consecutive September games to Parkview and Winter Park, Fla. Norcross’ best feature is its trio of ball catchers – WR Zion Taylor (Georgia Tech), Nakai Poole (Mississippi State) and TE Lawson Luckie (Georgia). Each has more than 400 yards receiving. A.J. Watkins has thrown for 1,507 yards and rushed for 454. North Gwinnett is known for defensive stars Kaden McDonald, a 300-pound defensive lineman who committed to Ohio State on Monday, and Grant Godfrey, a linebacker committed to Kentucky. They rank 1-2 on the team in tackles. Returning to the lineup recently has been DE Tyler Walton, who is committed to Wake Forest. On offense, North Gwinnett is a two-to-one run team led by Julian Walters’ 902 rushing yards. Sophomore QB Ryan Hall has thrown for 1,055 yards.

Lowndes at Carrollton

When, where: 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Grisham Stadium, Carrollton
Records, rankings: Lowndes is 5-5, the No. 4 seed from Region 1-7A and unranked; Carrollton is 10-0, the No. 1 seed from 2-7A and No. 4.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Things to know: Lowndes was ranked No. 8 in preseason while Carrollton, up from Class 6A, was unranked, but their seasons have gone in different directions. Lowndes is in jeopardy of finishing outside the top 10 and failing to win a playoff game for the first time since 2015. The Vikings also could have their first losing season since 1994. Still, it’s Lowndes, and the Vikings may point to their schedule, ranked the toughest in Class 7A by the Maxwell Ratings. Carrollton’s schedule is 31st. The Trojans haven’t played a top-10 7A team while Lowndes has played three and beaten then-No. 2 Grayson 24-14 on the road. Lowndes’ Marvis Parrish, a sophomore, has passed for 1,242 yards and rushed for a team-leading 691 yards and 15 touchdowns. Three of Lowndes’ top seven tackles are sophomores. Carrollton is averaging 445 total yards and 43.6 points, not happy news to an opponent that’s given up 40 points or more three times. Freshman QB Julian Lewis has thrown for 2,599 yards and 34 touchdowns. Bryce Hicks has rushed for 1,077 yards and scored 19 touchdowns, five receiving.
Winner plays: Newton/Marietta winner
