3 semifinals moved to neutral sites
Three Fulton County teams will be playing as the designated home teams at neutral sites Friday because of GHSA seating requirements for the semifinals.

Roswell will play Gainesville at McEachern’s Cantrell Stadium in Class 6A. Both are No. 1 seeds, and Roswell won the GHSA’s universal coin toss to be the designated home team.

Atlanta’s Lakewood Stadium will be the site of a doubleheader with Hughes, the designated home team, playing Rome in 6A and Milton, the designated home team, playing Mill Creek in 7A.

The GHSA requires 6,000 permanent seats for 7A semifinals and 4,000 for 6A semifinals. Bleachers are calculated as one seat per 24 inches in width. All seats must be at least 15 feet from the playing field.

It’s all big-boy football from now to the end of the playoffs, which resume today with 16 semifinals games in eight classifications.

Cinderella didn’t get an invitation. Thirty-one of the 32 semifinals teams are ranked. Fellowship Christian of Class 2A is the top-10 exception, but the Paladins were a 2021 semifinals team that started No. 5 in preseason and now carry an eight-game win streak to Fitzgerald to challenge the defending champion.

Two semifinals games match undefeated teams, and one pits No. 1 against No. 2. Here’s a closer look at the eight final fours.

Teams to beat: No. 1-ranked teams still playing are Hughes (6A), Ware County (5A), Cedartown (4A), Cedar Grove (3A), Fitzgerald (2A), Prince Avenue Christian (A Division I) and Bowdon (A Division II). The only absent No. 1 team is Class 7A’s Buford, eliminated in the second round.

Most intriguing game: Carrollton, playing in the highest classification for the first time and unranked in preseason, is 13-0 and chasing its first state finals appearance since 2013. Its quarterback, Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis, is the state’s most heralded freshman since Trevor Lawrence, whose high school coach, Joey King, now is Carrollton’s coach. Lewis has thrown for 3,339 yards. (Lawrence threw for 3,053 yards as a Cartersville freshman.) Carrollton is traveling 200 miles to Colquitt County, which also is 13-0. The Packers’ new coach, Sean Calhoun, is Carrollton’s former coach. Calhoun, hired in the offseason, was Colquitt County’s offensive coordinator during its 2014 and 2015 championship seasons and is 43-0 when a member of Colquitt County’s coaching staff.

No. 1 vs. No. 2: One game matches the two highest-ranked teams in their classification. That would be No. 2 North Oconee (13-0) at No. 1 Cedartown (13-0). It’s one of two semifinals between undefeated teams, joining Carrollton-Colquitt County. North Oconee, in its 19th season, has never reached a state final. Cedartown last made it in 2001 and won its only title in 1963.

Breaking new ground: Dutchtown, Schley County and St. Francis are in the semifinals for the first time. Appling County, Mill Creek, North Oconee and Troup are a win from their first finals.

Small-town opportunity: Aside from the first-timers, the three schools breaking the longest semifinal droughts are Bowdon and Johnson County (last made it in 2005) and Lincoln County (2012). Those three and semifinals newcomer Schley County play in Class A Division II, and that’s no coincidence. Until this season, the threshold for the lowest classification was about 600 students. Now, it’s around 400, a big victory for the little guy.

Regulars: Irwin County and Warner Robins are in the semifinals for the sixth consecutive season, and they’re 5-0 in those games. Either can join Buford (2007-16) and Eagle’s Landing Christian (2014-19) as only teams in state history reach six consecutive championship games. Benedictine, Fitzgerald and Irwin County are the only other schools that have made the semifinals each of the past three seasons.

Football towns: The three cities with two semifinals teams are Bogart (North Oconee, Prince Avenue Christian), Milton (St. Francis, Milton) and Roswell (Fellowship Christian, Roswell). School systems with multiple semifinals teams are Oconee (North Oconee, Oconee County) and Fulton (Milton, Roswell, Hughes).

Well-traveled: Oconee County is the only team to win three straight road games to reach the semifinals. The Warriors can become the 12th team in history to reach a championship game with four victories away from home. Their coach, Ben Hall, was the offensive coordinator for the 2008 Flowery Branch team that did it. Oconee County is a 23-point underdog to defending 3A champion Cedar Grove, according to the Maxwell Ratings.

Hard to predict: The lone pure tossup, according to Maxwell, is No. 2 Swainsboro (13-0) at No. 4 Irwin County (11-1) in A Division I. One-point favorites are Appling County over Thomson in 2A, Colquitt County over Carrollton in 7A and Johnson County over Schley County in A Division II.

Historic coaches: Ware County’s Jason Strickland is the 10th coach in GHSA history to lead three schools to the semifinals (Ware, Fitzgerald, Pierce County). Current St. Francis and former Cartersville coach Frank Barden and current Oconee County and former Jefferson coach Hall now have reached the semifinals with two schools.

Making themselves at home: The GHSA has minimum seating requirements for the semifinals, and three Fulton County schools had to move games elsewhere. Roswell is playing against Gainesville at McEachern’s Cantrell Stadium. Milton is playing Mill Creek and Hughes is playing Rome at Atlanta’s Lakewood Stadium in a doubleheader. The minimums for classes 6A and 7A are 6,000 permanent seats.

What’s next: The championship games are Dec. 8-10 at Center Parc Stadium.

Class 7A
*Carrollton 35, Colquitt County 27: Carrollton drove 99 yards for a 7-0 lead after stopping Colquitt County three times and the 1-yard line. Then down 17-14 with 29 seconds left in the first half, Carrollton drove 65 yards on four quick plays, with Bryce Hicks going over from the 1-yard line as the half ended. Carrollton never trailed again. Hicks rushed for 205 yards on 37 carries and threw a 9-yard TD pass to Jordan White for a 28-17 lead with eight minutes left in the third quarter. Freshman Julian Lewis was 17-of-26 passing for 248 yards and two touchdowns. Caleb Odom had six receptions for 117 yards. His 42-yard reception from Lewis set up Hicks’ pivotal score before halftime.
***What it means: Carrollton, in its first season in the highest classification, is in its first state final since 2013 and can win its first championship since 1998. Joey King, who led Cartersville to state titles in 2015 and 2016, became one of fewer than 40 coaches all-time to lead two schools to state finals and can join a list of fewer than 20 to win titles at two. Colquitt County, under first-year coach Sean Calhoun, who was Carrollton’s coach for five seasons, went 13-1, its best finish since 2018.

*Mill Creek 48, Milton 14: Mill Creek scored touchdowns on its first five possessions After Milton got within 35-7 in the second quarter, Mill Creek’s Miles Gindlesperger returned an onside kick 50 yards for a touchdown. Hayden Clark was 7-of-8 passing for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Makhail Wood had five receptions for 153 yards and three touchdowns. Cam Robinson rushed for 100 yards on 15 carries.
***What it means:  Mill Creek avenged a 2021 quarterfinal loss and reached its first state final in its 19th season. Milton finished 10-4 under first-year coach Ben Reaves. The game, which started at 5 p.m. at neutral Lakewood Stadium in Atlanta, drew a sparse crowd and sparked debate about the GHSA’s Class 7A minimum seating requirement of 6,000. Milton did not meet the minimum, and Mill Creek declined to waive the rule, prompting the move to a venue more than 30 miles from either school. Visit NationalHSFB.com to learn more,

Class 6A
*Gainesville 35, Roswell 28: Gainesville’s Baxter Wright completed his first 15 passes and finished with 208 yards and four touchdowns, and Darius Cannon scored on a 94-yard kickoff return and a 23-yard reception. Roswell had a first-and-goal from the 3-yard line in the final two minutes but failed to score after Ja’Quez Sims’ second-down sack. Roswell had another scoreless drive into the red zone earlier in the quarter.
***What it means: Gainesville, coming off a 5-5 finish in Class 7A, is in the finals for the first time since its 2012 Class 5A championship team led by Deshaun Watson and is in position for its first undefeated season since 1925. Josh Niblett became the only new coach to take a team to the finals this season, and Gainesville became the only finalist that didn’t make the playoffs in 2021. Roswell finished 12-2 and was stopped short of its first finals appearance since 2016.

*Hughes 42, Rome 3: Prentiss “Air” Noland was 21-of-24 passing for 242 yards and three touchdowns, two to Jediyah Willoughby. D’Marcus Brown had three sacks. Hughes intercepted three passes, and Xavier Leonard returned one for a touchdown. Hughes led 14-0 in the first quarter and put the game away with three scores in the fourth.
***What it means: Hughes, the 2021 runner-up and the preseason No. 1 team, improved to 14-0 and returned to the finals in search of its first championship. Rome finished 12-2, stopped short of its first finals appearance since its 2017 Class 5A championship. Visit NationalHSFB.com to learn more.

Class 7A
Carrollton vs. Mill Creek
S.gif
S.gif S.gif
When, where: 7 p.m. Saturday, Center Parc Stadium, Atlanta
Records, rankings: Carrollton is 14-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 2-7A and No. 4; Mill Creek is 13-1, the No. 2 seed from 8-7A and No. 3.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Things to know: Mill Creek is a 19-year-old Gwinnett County school playing in its first state final after reaching the quarterfinals or better four of the past seven seasons. The Hawks’ loss this season was to No. 1-ranked Buford 39-27 on Oct. 14. The Hawks have won seven straight games since, finishing each with running clocks. Those include three playoff victories over top-10 teams. Mill Creek’s defense features major Division I recruits Caleb Downs, a safety/wide receiver committed to Alabama, and Jamal Anderson, a linebacker committed to Clemson. Both are sons of former NFL players. Mill Creek’s main offensive playmakers are QB Hayden Clark (5,001 career passing yards, 51 TD passes, both school records), RB Cam Robinson (1,550 yards rushing this season) and Makhail Wood (the program’s first 1,000-yard receiver with 1,015). Carrollton has won seven state titles but all in classes 2A or A, and none since 1998. The Trojans moved into the highest class for the first time this season and were unranked to start the year despite a Class 6A semifinal finish in 2021. Carrollton can become the first team outside of metro Atlanta and south Georgia to win the highest class since LaGrange in 1991. Carrollton beat Colquitt County 35-27 in the semifinals in a game between 7A’s remaining undefeated teams. Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis has thrown for 3,587 yards and 43 touchdowns, which are freshman state records. Bryce Hicks has rushed for 1,544 yards, caught 55 passes for 553 yards and scored 30 touchdowns. Caleb Odom has 57 catches for 954 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Maxwell Ratings’ projected score: Mill Creek 28, Carrollton 27

Class 6A
Gainesville vs. Hughes

When, where: 7 p.m. Friday, Center Parc Stadium, Atlanta
Records, rankings: Gainesville is 14-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 8-6A and No. 4; Hughes is 14-0, the No. 1 seed from 5-6A and No. 1.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Things to know: Gainesville was 5-5 last season in Class 7A but is one victory from its first state title since 2012 and first undefeated, untied season since 1925. The Red Elephants’ new coach, Josh Niblett, has validated the hype of his seven state titles won in Alabama. First-year starting QB Baxter Wright has thrown for 3,152 yards and 38 touchdowns. Naim Cheeks has 2,316 yards from scrimmage, 1,775 rushing, and scored 23 touchdowns. Leading tackler Jeremiah Telander, a linebacker committed to Tennessee, is the team’s only major Power 5-conference commit. Hughes’ has a trove of committed D-I talent that includes DB Terrance Love (Auburn), DL Josh Horton (Miami), OL Bo Hughley (Georgia) and TE Jelani Thurman (Ohio State). Hughes has two 1,000-yard rushers (Jekail Middlebrook and Justus Savage) and a 1,000-yard receiver (Jaden Barnes). Prentiss “Air” Noland has thrown for 3,832 yards. His 52 TD passes are four short of the state record set by Macon County’s K’Hari Lane in 2016. The Panthers need two points to break the state record for points in a season set by Rome with 758 in 2017. They can become the first team in GHSA history to score at least 40 points in every game, and they can become the second, after Valdosta in 1971, to beat every opponent by more than 20 points. Hughes, a south Fulton County school that opened in 2009, was the 2021 runner-up to Buford. The Panthers have been ranked No. 1 since preseason. They’ve never won a state title.
Maxwell Ratings’ projected score: Hughes 38, Gainesville 22

Class 5A
Ware County vs. Warner Robins

When, where: 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Center Parc Stadium, Atlanta
Records, rankings: Ware County is 13-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 1-5A and No. 1; Warner Robins is 10-4, the No. 2 seed from 2-5A and No. 8.
Last meeting: Ware County won 29-21 in 2021.
Things to know: Ware County is a 64-year-old school seeking it first state title. The Gators have been state runners-up three times, most recently in 2012. They’re a perennial playoff team that has advanced at least one round each of the past 16 years. Ware was ranked conservatively in preseason, at No. 7, partly because of the graduation of all-state QB Thomas Castellanos, a four-year starter now at Central Florida. The new guy, Niko Smith, has thrown for 2,236 yards. Top target Jarvis Hayes has 963 receiving yards. Dae’jeaun Dennis has rushed for 1,149 yards and 17 touchdowns. But Ware’s strength is its defense. No opponent has scored more than 16 points in a game, and Ware’s 6.2 points-allowed average is the lowest in any classification. Warner Robins can become the 14th team in GHSA history to win three consecutive championships. The Demons are the third program to reach six straight state finals. Warner Robins is the only finalist outside the top five in the rankings in any class. The Demons started 1-4 while averaging 8.4 points per game. They’ve since won nine straight games while averaging 39.8 points. The average is 33.8 in the playoffs. Backup QB Isiah Canion has started the past three games and is 41-of-59 passing for 581 yards and five touchdowns. Malcolm Brown rushed for a season-high 190 yards in the semifinals and has 3,253 yards for his career. This game’s marquee player is Warner Robins DL Vic Burley, a three-year starter committed to Clemson.
Maxwell Ratings’ projected score: Ware County 24, Warner Robins 7
