Last night, Mater Dei was invited to play STA in the Broward vs The USA event in August 2023. And Cen10 was invited to play MC in the same event. Fingers crossed!

Did Cen10 say they would travel? They typically suit up >100 players and Logan has said if they ever travel, every kid on the team gets to travel.

LOS ALAMITOS — The Division 1 football playoffs will be contested by 10 teams, the CIF-Southern Section announced Sunday morning as it released pairings for all 14 divisions, ending heavy speculation about the size of the marquee group.

As expected, defending champion Mater Dei (10-0), St. John Bosco (9-1) and Centennial of Corona (9-1) led the way in Division 1 with Los Alamitos (8-2), Long Beach Poly (10-0), Mission Viejo (9-1), Edison (9-1) and Santa Margarita (6-4) rounding out the top eight.

But the Division 1 bracket this season will be expanded by two teams with JSerra (5-5) and Orange Lutheran (6-4) joining the group when play begins Friday, Nov. 4.

As the top-four seeds, Mater Dei, St. John Bosco, Centennial and Los Alamitos received first-round byes as did Poly and Mission Viejo.

There are only two first-round games: JSerra at Santa Margarita and Orange Lutheran-Edison.

The Division 1 championship game is scheduled for Nov. 25 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The size of the Division 1 bracket was highly-anticipated because it determines the starting point of the other divisions since the Southern Section uses CalPreps’ power-rankings as the primary guideline for team placement. Once the number of teams in the Division 1 is set, coaches can project their divisions by following the computer-generated ratings for automatic qualifying teams and those in contention for at-large berths.

The Southern Section introduced the power-rating system for the football playoffs last season.

Last fall, Division 1 featured an eight-team bracket without any byes and started a week later than the other divisions. Mater Dei defeated Servite 27-7 in the final at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.
